I attended a mother’s blessing for my sister-in-law (Sarah) on Friday night. I had never been to one before, but I was familiar with the concept and excited to see (and document) one up close.
Blessingways are like baby showers, but much more focused on the mother and giving her the support and encouragement she needs to embark on her journey into labor. Since Sarah has chosen to give birth naturally, and at home, this was especially meaningful for her. Here’s some photos from her special evening with the women closest to her.
We started with a nice dinner together. Sarah’s mom made a delicious chicken salad and she and her best friend Sandra set the table so beautifully, in soft feminine hues.
The reason we’re all here:
After dinner we all gathered in the living room and listened to Sarah’s birth fears. Â Here Tiffany gives her a hug for support and encouragement:
We all listened to affirmations we brought and read to Sarah one by one:
Next Mom prepared the henna for Sarah’s belly tattoo, while we all presented her with birth beads, which she will wear during labor to uplift and comfort her. Â Each of our beads was to represent something meaningful and helpful to Sarah. Â For example, Sandra and I both presented Sarah with beads that belonged to our mothers.
Here are some photos of Sarah’s mother presenting her with her beads:
Nothing like a hug from Mom:
Sarah is ready for her henna now, a conclusion to a beautiful evening.
The beautiful mom-to-be unstifles a laugh:
Such an amazing evening. Â I feel so blessed to have been a part of it. Â And I look even more forward now to my birth photography session with Sarah and little Sophia!
